what in the --

[Give him a moment. He just figured out how to use this monstrosity.]

I'm -- ah -- not sure if anybody is listening to this. This is a message to Luceti. [He pronounced it wrong. Whichever way you pronounce it, Lucetians, he did it wrong. Judge him and his lack of talent with foreign words.]

There is a ship in port, The Britannia. Quite a beauty, I have to commend Mr Kennedy for the design of her. Unfortunately she's come to be rather understaffed, so if there are any men who are interesting in crewing her....I'm sure her captain would appreciate it greatly.

That is all...back to your business.

[If William Bush could have it his way, he'd start a press-gang right here, right now. But that required a navy and men to help. So asking nicely would have to do.]

[ Oh no he hates the super-glare. But his answer comes with a distinct lack of hesitation, for whatever that much is worth. ]

Without a doubt, sir. [ There is literally no place else he'd rather be than on this ship. ]

And I think you've not have nearly enough. I've been here a year and you haven't. This isn't the Navy, and your ways don't work here.

["Your ways." He's not even sure if he just said that.]

I see. And what's the going rate for salt these days?

[ ...ahhh, he'll tack on in truest reserved fashion. ] I'm certain she'll be well-crewed to whatever end. [ Or at least he really likes to think so.

He enjoyed the tour with potential crew volunteers, for all that he knew he would probably never see a stranger collection of volunteers again. It would likely involve a lot of work, getting everyone and everything into proper form, but if Mr. Kennedy and Captain Hornblower had made their choices, well. He'd hardly object to working towards their preferences. That is what puppies are meant to do. ]

[You are already an annoyance, Bush, and close to pushing Derek's snap button.

But if he can hold his temper back home with worse assholes (who would definitely know better in their own home), he can do it here. Kennedy and Hornblower will already have their hands full talking the rest of the crew into not leaving...

Or giving Bush what for. No doubt in some very interesting, and painful, ways.

Now how to word this without peppering it with profanity.

Be grateful Derek was raised in a high class family, Bush.]

I won't be the captain on this ship, so you can drop the 'sir' unless it becomes necessary.

I will ask though that you consider the fact that you are not working for Her Majesty's navy, and you're going to have to take into account, and respect the fact, that you are dealing with several different cultures. Most of which are far past and beyond thinking a woman's place is as nothing more than a mother and keeper of the household.

And if you can't manage that, then at least spare your actual captain the nuisance of having to clean up after you by refraining from saying anything about it, especially in front of the crew. If you would, please.

[Oh really?

He's just going to arch a brow at this and not comment. People are being rather polite about this and as a Captain of a (presumably) all male crew, though for reasons not being of women are incapable, he doesn't feel he has right to comment as well. Law's encountered the attitude before - it'll either be beaten or shocked out of him or it won't.

He finds himself feeling sorry for the man. Rare thing when it comes to Navy men, but well, it happens.

These are going to be rough seas for you, Mister Bush. Very rough.]

[Kennedy's face softens slightly. No matter what just happened, this man was there for him when he was dying. That doesn't go away.]

Wait till your fool words insult them enough to drive them off. There's no penalty against desertion here. They're volunteers. Women or not, if they walk away, we can't move the ship an inch. Who looks the fool then?
mikangirl: DEFAULT DEFAULT (You kind of suck.)

[personal profile] mikangirl 2012-01-25 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I certainly hope he gets used to how things are different here. For his own sake, if nothing else.

It is now. [The liberty to say what he likes...] There's no Navy here, and I'm not bound to any stale Articles or traditions any longer.

[Because hell, there's got to be something good about being dead.]

[she'd heard that William was back, but she hadn't had the chance to come by and reintroduce herself.

Listening to this, she's torn between the desire to sigh...and sympathetic amusement as the responses came pouring in]

Mr. Bush... [never mind that he hadn't actually given his name. Really, he's lucky she's being even this formal, at the moment.]

...I don't suppose you've talked with Horatio about this...announcement?

[But Sanji doesn't release the full force of his... colorful attitude just yet. He'd rather stab with pointed subtlety]

That so? [quiet mulling, and then:]

So you're saying that even if a woman is as capable, or more capable of manning a ship on the waters than a man, that doesn't matter...

Because they don't have a shitty dick in their pants.
